Before going for the backpacking trip you have to finalize on the fuel type you decide for the best backpacking stove. There can be canister fuel or the liquid fuel. There are other alternatives of fuel available as well. You must choose on the one after considering the camping duration and the weather conditions of that region.
It also depends on the preferred cooking style. You may want a quick meal that you can make from the boiling water. You use the dried food. You may like to have the gourmet style food where in you need to simmer it for long duration.
The stoves with the canister fuel work on the pressurized gasses. There are a couple of such gases, isobutane and propane. Isobutane has an advantage that it can burn hot and efficient in frozen temperatures too.
The advantage while using the canister fuel is that it can self seal when you detach it from the stove. Therefore there is no possibility of self leakage. There are two methods from which you can connect the canister fuel to the stove, they are mentioned below
The low profile
The burner is based on its base. The canister is connected to the fuel hose through the hose. Here the canister fuel can be inserted. It will increase the efficiency in the cold weather. The platform is firm and no tip over will happen. It may be bulky though.
The upright profile
The stove is over the canister and it is connected through the screws. This makes the stove very compact but high. The disadvantage here is the camping stove would have the chance of tip over. It is a tall height so it is prone to such accidents.
There is a loophole in using the canister fuel that it can depressurized in the cold climates. Therefore, there would be low or no flame . The efficiency, reduces many folds. It resumes to the normal pressure when the rapture is increased.
Liquid-fuel stoves work naphtha or the white gas as it is popularly known as. There are no impurities as it is a refined and the processed gas. The advantage using this fuel is that it works very well in the frozen temperatures. A good maintenance is required with these gas stoves. You need to clean the hose or have to replace the O rings regularly. Most of the stoves will need the priming that is preheating the fuel line.
There is an alternative fuel option too. The fuel stove burning through the twigs and leaves. You can collect them through the back country itself. Hence, you do not need to carry anything with you in form of fuel. The stoves using this are heavy and large.
There can be a challenge of searching the fuel for them, especially in the wet weather. One more alternative is alcohol as a fuel. Alcohol stoves cannot burn with the same efficiency as canister stoves or the white gas stoves. It hence take very long to boil the water.
They are solid fuel tablets available now in the form of fuel. They are very compact in size me very light. They are very good if there is an emergency. The efficiency of such tablets is very poor. It is the major drawback with the fuel tablets.
